Inspired by the moon landing and founded in 1973, BrightFocus took their own moonshot and dedicated its mission to fund critical research to find cures for the most pressing health issues of the day. Its first breakthrough was helping to fund the artificial heart, including the first transplant in 1982. Since then, BrightFocus has concentrated its funding in three flagship programs, Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Macular Degeneration Research, and National Glaucoma Research. They have funded almost $300 million to over 6,000 scientists across 25 countries, resulting in myriad breakthroughs, including the first blood test to diagnose Alzheimer’s earlier, now used in both the U.S. and Europe.
Dementia Society of America
The Dementia Society aims to significantly raise the awareness in America to the spectrum of conditions collectively known as Dementia, by making available, non-medical, easy-to-understand Dementia awareness materials and resources for individuals, small businesses, larger corporations, civic organizations and communities-at-large. The Society also underwrites monthly programs within continuing care communities and in public Dementia-friendly forums, that emphasize meaningful therapies for those living with Dementia, and their caregivers, such as: Audible Arts- Music & Singing; Dance & Movement; Visual Arts; and Touch & Sensory Stimulation.
