David Wilkerson, a young pastor from Pennsylvania, heard God say “Go to New York City and help those boys”. He started the ministry of Teen Challenge in 1958 and the dramatic conversion and transformation of a notorious Brooklyn gang leader, Nicky Cruz, is described in his 1963 book ‘The Cross & the Switchblade”. Teen Challenge’s mission is to bring life-changing hope to addicts and their families. After years of growing the organization and acquiring many properties throughout the US and Canada, 88 scenic acres in Lebanon, NJ were gifted to Teen Challenge in 2014 allowing it to move from its Newark location and to increase its facility to 90 beds. The highly structured program provides the framework needed to rebuild self-worth, to overcome life’s struggles and to be a productive member of society. The duration of the 12-month program gives addicts and their families the time they need to heal and renew themselves, & the Power of Christ works through its program rebuilding hope, strength and courage.
