Founded as the Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease (CCHD) in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie, a dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and wife of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie who died at age 55 from the disease, this was the first organization to address the debilitating diesase of Huntington's. Passing just a few months shy of discovering the genetic marker for HD in 1983, the organization continued in Marjorie's vision, renaming itself the Huntington’s Disease Society of America and has pursued its mission of improving the lives of everyone affected by Huntington’s disease through community services and education to advocacy and research, HDSA's network of chapters and HDSA Centers of Excellence.
